2. Safety Excellence Management
The PEIRCSC also organized a Safety Excellence Management Workshop, This provided a wide range of Health, Safety and Environmental Management tips. SEM helped participants in general rights and responsibilities on the jobsites under the act and regulations, identify hazards and controls used in residential construction. We held 2 courses in July one in Summerside and one in Charlottetown. We were very pleased with the out come of these seminars and hope to put more on like this to better inform our members.
Four ways to become a qualified (Red Seal certified) residential construction tradesperson on PEI are: 1. Accelerated Secondary Apprenticeship Program (ASAP) 2. Holland College + Apprenticeship Training 3. Earn While You Learn – Apprenticeship Training 4. On-the-job Training (after so many years (hours) worked in the trade you can write a Challenge exam).
Apprenticeship combines on-the-job training under the supervision of a qualified tradesperson and classroom training at a training establishment. About 80% of an apprentice's training takes place on-the-job. The other 20% involves technical training provided at, or through a post-secondary training establishment - usually at Holland College or an off-Island institute. Did you know that ...
According to the Canadian Home Builders' Association (CHBA), as of March 2007, there are 64 residential construction trades in the residential construction industry at this time. These different types of skilled tradespeople are hired by new home builders and renovators in the execution of their work. However, on PEI, there are 23 designated residential construction trades available through PEI Apprenticeship.
The following are some other specialty trades within the residential construction industry.
